Menschen für Menschen sets a precedent

All over the world the question of how to provide optimum educational opportunities is the subject of repeated socio-political discussions. It is also clear to the people of Ethiopia that long-term development is not possible without it. Although there has been an increase in the number of state primary schools, there are still far too few of them. Today it is estimated that 40% of children of school age have no access to education. "This is why the key role of our work is to strengthen the educational sector," says Karlheinz Böhm.

School work for a better future

The awareness that education generates long-term economic and social progress plays an important role for Almaz and Karlheinz Böhm’s Ethiopia Relief, which attempts to close the gaps where they are largest. Since 1981 Menschen für Menschen has built and equipped schools for whole generations of children. These schools were built in poverty-stricken regions where the educational facilities were either non-existent or in the form of dilapidated, dark huts that were much too small and lacked even benches for the children to sit on.

Children rely on your help

Menschen für Menschen enables children to learn in their familiar surroundings and humane conditions. Thousands of them now have better prerequisites for their start into an independent life. The fun and ambitions of young people are a source of hope.

The future in capital letters – with "ABC 2015"

Almaz and Karheinz Böhm launched the education programme "ABC 2015" in 2008 to give more impetus to their educational work in Ethiopia and explicitly fight the dire shortage of educational facilities. Menschen für Menschen is aiming high: the programme will enable hundreds of thousands of children to attend school and considerably increase the literacy rate. The first three letters of the alphabet stand as a symbol for the ability to read and write, and "2015" is the target year.

Moreover, adults will also be included in the programme to boost the overall literacy rate. The number of reading and writing courses, as well as access to computers, will be increased and more teaching and training possibilities will be arranged for.
